Story #41
Q: How did you decide on your undergraduate course of study?
A: I was contemplating between Chemistry and Mathematics initially, and did not even know that there is a Statistics course then. After attending the open house talks, I learnt about the Statistics course in NUS and realised it is actually more suitable for me because I am more of a "application" kind of person. Mathematics is too theoretical in some sense, and I decided on Statistics.
Q: In retrospect, what did you think were the most useful lessons/ skills/ knowledge you'd gained from your undergraduate education?
A: The presentation skills and computing knowledge were some skills that I have picked up during my undergraduate education.
Q: How has your undergraduate education influenced your career choice?
A: The statistics courses introduced me to a myriad of statistical models and methods, widening my knowledge of data analysis. It has armed me with the quantitative and qualitative skills required of a data analyst, influencing me to take up a data-related career.
Q: Briefly describe your current job scope.
A: I am currently a senior associate in the advisory arm of an accounting firm, specialising in fraud-related data analytics and investigations. We provide consultation services to companies to help them detect potential fraud proactively, using rule-based analysis as well as statistical methods.
Q: To what extent is your current job related to your undergraduate course of study?
A: Somewhat related.
Q: What are some additional areas you wish your undergraduate education could have covered?
A: Real-life application of theories, and computing courses that closely relate to real-life work scenarios.
