Story #11
Q: How did you decide on your undergraduate course of study?
A: I was the 3rd pioneering batch of a four-year degree course, meaning there was no graduating batch when I first joined. Comm Studies was something that I found interesting for a traditional Science student. It was simply an act of rebellion against parental wishes to go for professional degree courses and make full use of my past 2 years of science in HCJC. At 19, it's time to follow your heart and explore your own choice instead of listening to parents/elders and adhering to the path plan for you.
Q: In retrospect, what did you think were the most useful lessons/ skills/ knowledge you'd gained from your undergraduate education?
A: Each course teaches you to think and analyse issues in a different way. Learning to find your own answers to questions that might not have any answer today.
Q: How has your undergraduate education influenced your career choice?
A: I majored in public relations and advertising in college. At the advice of a professor, I joined a PR agency upon graduation as an account executive, which allowed me a glimpse of all the various industries e.g. semiconductor, fashion, banking, government etc within a short span of time. Working with clients from different sectors allowed me to better understand what I enjoyed doing and my strengths (humanities with maths) before I made the next career move.
Q: Briefly describe your current job scope.
A: Marketing strategy for investment management products and services in Asia, covering the developed markets of Japan, Korea, HK and Singapore to emerging markets like Malaysia, Vietnam, China and Thailand.
Q: To what extent is your current job related to your undergraduate course of study?
A: Somewhat related.
Q: What are some additional areas you wish your undergraduate education could have covered?
A: Having studied and worked in the U.S. after my undergraduate degree in Singapore, I do believe that openness to discussion and challenges should be encouraged.
